Easter sweet bread (Tsoureki)

Serves: 6 small loaves Cooking Time: 350 for 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 5 lbs of flour
  • 2 cups of sweet butter
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 6 eggs
  • 3 cups of milk
  • 2 packages of yeast
  • 1/2 cup of warm water
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar

Instructions

Whip the butter with sugar, add well beaten eggs, milk, and mix together.

Add the two packages of yeast with the warm water and 1 teaspoon of sugar and wait until it froths.

After it froths add to the egg mixture and mix well again.

Pour flour gradually into the butter mixture to produce the dough.

Pour onto counter and knead well until smooth.

Place in warm area in the house and cover with dish towels until it doubles in size.

Punch down and shape into loaves and let rise again for 2 hours. (Place in warm area and cover with dish towels)

Bake for 30 mins at 350

Notes

Brush the loaves with an egg wash and add sesame seeds. At Easter it is tradition to place a red egg in the middle, it adds a special Easter touch and is beautiful for a table centerpiece! Kali Anastasi!
