Like most industries, the food industry is ever changing and evolving. I love a hands on approach to education. It would be amazing to jet off to another country, and immerse myself in their culture, food, and techniques. But, realistically, it can be difficult to find time in your busy day-to-day schedule to fit in research and education. Luckily, there are so many food-oriented events, and festivals to attend right here in the United States.

Last weekend I was fortunate enough to be able to attend an all-female event in Brooklyn, New York — the Cherry Bombe 2019 Jubilee! It’s a conference full of the food industries most innovative, iconic, and relevant women. It was amazing to interact with women who have plowed through the food industry. They truly paved a way for the next generation of women in cooking and baking.

Some highlights of the event include:

Brooklyn native and winner of 5 James Beard Awards, Dorie Greenspan and food writer and hysterical actress, Madhur Jaffrey – both of these amazing women are such inspirations. They reminded me that my career never has to end, despite age.

Top Chef’s host, Padma Lakshmi – who motivated me with her broad and diverse sense of the food industry, as well as being a striking beauty!

James Beard Winner from 2018, Missy Robbins – who also holds a Michelin Star at both of her Brooklyn based restaurants, Lilia and Misi. She shared with us her heartfelt stories on how she beat cancer while running her restaurants. As well as how she learned to balance all aspects of her life while remaining a force.

And of the very culturally hot Netflix docu-series, Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat, Samin Nosrat – who is not only a chef but also a talented writer, she is also a resident columnist for The New York Times Magazine column, Eat. Samin has an infectious laugh, and her quirkiness is enchanting! I loved listening to her stories about her family and their experiences.

Beyond the speakers there were book signings that offered a chance to enjoy some one-on-one with the talent! So many incredible sponsors, which meant incredible treats and snacks – a lot of gluten-free and vegan options! Lunch was provided by Dig Inn — they have locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Boston. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for next year! Be sure to check out Cherry Bombe Magazine as well as their podcast, Radio Cherry Bombe, where you can hear interviews with most of the featured chefs and bakers from the event.
